"Three qualities are required if one is to become and artist, One must have aptitude, or the ability to acquire mastery of the art; one must have tremendous love for one’s art in order to work on it with determination, effort and concentration, and one must have imagination and creativity to develop the art along new and unknown paths."
Most people begin dance lessons just for the fun of exploring a new art and for healthy recreation. Dancing once or twice a week gives a student a chance to learn basic skills and enjoy the fun of dance; however, some students fall in love with movement and long for a more comprehensive dance experience, which involves more concentrated study.
Since the goals and expectations of the recreational dancer differ from the dancer wanting to develop professional level skills, offering the same lesson to everyone would be frustrating to all.
The structure and tone of dance classes must differ to satisfy everyone’s dance experience ideal. For this reason, REFLEX classes are organized into three divisions.
All students pre-K through 2nd grade are introduced to movement in the KIDDANCE center. When a child turns 8, the body and mind is ready for more defined training, and she is ready to choose REFLEX Recreational dance classes or our Professional dance training program.
Dance classes for adults combine creative expression with exercise for a more engaging fitness regime that is as fun as it is challenging. With respect to the adult student’s maturity, these dance classes introduce movement in a way that blends the physical with the intellectual, helping students develop a better understanding of dance as an art form and recreational activity. Our dance class offerings change in respect to the interests of our busy adults, but often include tap, jazz and ballet/stretch.
Recreational classes are perfect for students wanting to explore the arts with a limited commitment. Classes are organized by age, and students are invited to sign up for whatever subject interests them.
The emphasis in these classes is to make dance fun while developing performance skills and a better understanding of dance.
Students wishing for more rapid advancement are encouraged to enroll in a the professional dance program, a series of classes that meets two or three times a week for a progressive ballet and jazz class each day.
When dance program students have mastered the required foundation skills, they are also introduced to Pointe and modern, and they are encouraged to take elective classes (tap or acro) to round out their skills.
The program classes are somewhat stricter in nature and students must adhere to attendance and conduct codes, but any young dancer with a sincere desire to achieve excellence in dance embraces the hard work and discipline willingly, because the pride and joy that comes with being truly good at an art form is so rewarding.
Not all program students choose to make a career of dance, but quality training develops skills that can lead to college scholarships and other opportunities. Most importantly, the personal discipline and confidence learned in the dance class helps young people achieve whatever dreams they do have.
